The new album shows more musical diversity than one would expect from an often mis-categorized "hippie jam band". Loud guitars and 3 part harmonies are often the staple of BSR, but Breathe shows other elements like the techno jam of "Busted", reserved lo-fi of "Dream" and "Ooh Ahh", the tongue twisting rap of "Dormant", and the Americana electric bluegrass feel of "Day Breaks".
We are slowly making each track available on-line. Check back to the website to look for annoucements for when a new track becomes available. Each track is listsed below (if available).

Being
Lyrics:
It's not what I see but that which where by I see
It's not what I hear but that which where by I hear
Waking up early with my baby, seeing her eyes glow, feeling her warm hold
Picking on the porch watching the sun shine, it just feels right the world looking so fine
It's not what you think but that which where by you think
It's not about being who you want to be but it is being who you are
Awake to the day no thing you adore but this moment and your smile, i've got no need no more
take some time out from the work day, get your feet wet take in a deep breath
loose site of tomorrow for today
today is all that lives anyway
Its not what we do but it how we do
Its not that we love but is how we love
look at all the good things we can do in this world help out your neighbor its a way of livin
were all walking around empty searching for something we just gotta live through love and love to live

"Being" is one of the most emotional songs I have ever written. It was created on a sunny spring morning in 08 while sitting with my daughter Layla on the back patio. I had just finished reading Eckhart Tolles "A New Earth" and was treasuring the moment as the sun delightfully warmed my soul. The track is a statement of presence and peace. So many days, months, years can go by with us doing, doing, doing and never taking the time to "be". I hope as you listen to the track you can take some time to "be" even if it is just for a few moments. Best wishes to all!!!

Where Are You?
Lyrics:
Whereareyou in life? Do you feel alright? What's the price you paid? Traveling roads you pave Whereareyou tonight? Stars shine so bright.
Lest you say that you're ok Sit back relax enjoy the ride you can't say Find some time that your living your life or they'll leave you behind
but along the way you may stray take just a bit more to ease your mind but you can't say or you may find that you're not living your life. you're not living your life
The road that keeps on winding is the road that you know you're riding

The creation of this song is especially memorable to me. John called me one day and said he was on my side of town and wanted to know if I felt like hanging out. I told him to stop over, and when he got to my place we decided out of the blue to write a song. I had recently written a guitar riff (a bunch of spaced out power chords thrown together) that we used for the verse and chorus. John and I went to work on the melody. I had an old 4-track that we recorded the vocals with using scat-like-nonsense in place of the lyrics that hadn't been written yet that we formed the parts and harmonies with including the back and forth in the chorus. Then we wrote the lyrics and after just a few hours we had a finished song. While this may sound like we just slapped a song together, I find myself struggling with how to convey the feeling in that room as all these ideas and parts just floated around until it all fell nice and neatly into this pile of music that became a song.

Here
Lyrics:
With you, we'll never know
The day, where does it go
At last this might world takes all that we could give
and falls apart agian
Here I welcome all of you
to take some time to think
and you may see we have lost our way
so look behind the stares and you will see it coming around
again
Do you even know
What you are fighting for
Its not as it seems
when you walk out the door
and see the light
again
Here I welcome all of you
to take some time to think
and you may see we have lost our way
so look behind the stares and you will see it coming around
just look around, its coming around again

The working title for "Here" was "Finish the Riff". I was messing around on the piano at home before band practice and came up with the riff that is the first and last 2 measures of this song. When I got to band practice, I played the 2 bars for the band asked the them to finish the riff. We messed around for a while and the verse started to form. The next week, John came with a chorus and lyrics. We combined everthing we and and the song went through several arrangements until it settled into what you hear on the album today.

Miss B. Havin
Lyrics:
Hey there pretty little girl, I see you givin me that smile Why don't you come and sit with me alittle while Youv'e got laughing eyes and a smile that's just plain evil You take away my words and then move in for the kill I'll treat you the best I can girl, Won't leave you until my very end So don't give me that same old line about just being friends.
Let's start misbehavin' And enjoy what we have found Let's start misbehavin' And get ourselves a bit unwound
I better warn you girl, I've got a couple tricks up my sleeve But I'll probably try to pull those ace out before you run to leave I've got a little wine, a little vinyl, girl how about a foot rub If that makes you feel a little bit dirty, get naked, and hop right into my tub Don't tell me I need any nice girl, baby I only want you So let me whisper in your ear, and I'll tell you what we should do
Let's start misbehavin' And enjoy what we have here Let's start misbehavin' Baby why don't you come on over here
All I need is your attention and affection Sweet luscious lips that taste just like confection So grant me a sweet one dancing cheek to cheek I know you're trying to be strong but I'm going for a spot that's weak

This song goes out to all the flirty girls. You know fellas, the ones that never would let you take her on a date, but always smiled just more than enough to make you think she liked you. Ahh, the wiles of the women. This song goes out to all the fellas too though, keep tryin', maybe this one will work out. Strike one...

Dormant is actually a really old song and the lyrics were pieced together over 9 years. The lyrics to this song don't mean much as a whole, but every line or group of lines is a reference to something, so they're not meaningless either. So trying to describe what the song is about would mean dissecting every line and explaining the references which would ruin the fun of it, since people have already come up with their own meanings for a lot of the lines which is probably way cooler than what most of the lines represent. This song was originally performed by my old band (Runga Kutta) which at the time, only had the first verse. Several years later (it must have been early 2003, because the first line of the second verse is a reference to the search for WMD's in Iraq..... ok I'll give you that one) the second verse was added. Many moons later I introduced the tune to BSR and we quickly started playing it live. Shortly after, I wrote a third and fourth verse. The fourth verse has never been played live and wasn't included on the album.

Busted
Lyrics:
Busted, They took me away Nothing, was all I had to say They said "Tell me what you know son, and things will be just fine." But I wasn't gonna give up without a fight
The warrant, it got thrown away Without it, they didn't have much to say The judge had to say my case was dismissed But I 'm still on their short, short list
They came and busted me for something I didn't do That's what I told them but if they only know Well then for sure they'd lock me up and then they'd throw away the key That's why I had to tell them it wasn't me
Surveillance, I know their still watching me I keep the shade down, So inside they don't see The phone, we're pretty sure it's bugged So don't say anything stupid or I'll get plugged.

This song has its roots in Platteville, WI. The boys in blue were always a bit over-zealous, particularly towards a friend of ours, and the episode gave a snap shot into the "anything to prove a case or get evidence" mentality that is present with some of our finest. However, the rules are not always followed, and a closer examination of things showed that all their litlle blue ducks were not in a row. They were rather upset to called out by the judge. Afer that, they just waited for our friend to slip up for anyting... and watched... and watched, and generally just tried whatever they could do to get something on this kid in an effort to save face. Karma and justice, all things will work themselves out over time...

Red Sky
Lyrics:
You take the motor I'll take the line Sitin' here fishing man were having a good time Dark clouds rolling over, better head for cover fast But boy this is a day and were gonna make it last, Were gonna make it last.
Red Sky tonight tomorrow's fishermen's delight Can't wait to feel that big northern fight That big northern fight.
Morning comes sunshine it brings. Sitin' here eating pancakes were feeling like kings Mike caught his first walleye How great it is, just to see him smile Just to see him smile
Red Sky tonight tomorrow's fishermen's delight Boy you gotta keep your line in sight Your line in sight
As the night rolls on Dan breaks out the Yukon Sitin' by the fire all the thing we desire Good friends, fishin', yeah everything were wishin Making our own dreams, it's our Canadian mission It's our Canadian mission
The waters cold, haven't bathed in a week. This is no place for the women I'm sure they'd all freak
Red Sky tonight tomorrow's fishermen's delight From where were sitin' how can anyone fight.

We've been playing this song since the band formed back in 2004. It has gone thru many different arrangements, tempos, and the addition of the drum breakdown really solidified it's place as a common finale for many of our sets. I'll never forget playing it at Cosmic Railroad's Family (friendly) Gathering a few years back. We invited a dozen or more little kids up on the stage to help sing the chorus at the end. It was magical seeing so many young people share that moment on stage with us. Even though this song is John's tale of fishing trips to Canada it has become very personal to me as well. A group of high school buddies and I took an annual fishing trip up to Canada for 5 consecutive years. The lyrics of Red Sky take me back to those days every time I hear it. Coincidently we also had a guy named "Dan" in our group who would always bring a bottle of Yukon.

This song has the most family and friend connection to it of any song I have ever written. It was written years ago with a Canadian camp full of family and great friends. I was lucky enough as a youngster to have a father that was an adventurist and gave his sons the opportunity to experience adventures of their own. I can't say how much life experience I gained from these annual trips to the Canadian back country but I know that I am a better father, son and person from the time that I was blessed to spend there. As I have gotten older these trips are fewer and farther between which bring in further emotion to the song for me. If you are one of the lucky few you may just make it up with Doc Schneider in one of his numerous trips in the summer. I am sure to some degree we have all had these types of life moving memories and I hope this song stirs some for you.
